Bio: Jeff Ellen is a federal civilian scientist at the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific in San Diego with graduate degrees in Computer Science from the University of California San Diego and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Over the past 20 years, he has implemented machine learning algorithms for text analysis, deception detection, gesture recognition, plankton classification, and more while at NIWC. He has been the government’s Data Science/Engineering lead for the DARPA Ocean of Things (OoT) program since its inception in 2018. Dr. Ellen has been awarded a Department of Defense SMART Fellowship, a 2012 NIWC Science & Technology Excellence Award, and currently holds an appointment as a Visiting Scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
